The Pediatric Endocrine Society of Kenya (PESK) alongside the Clinton Health Access Initiative and the Ministry of Health take aim at improving the lives of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) in Bungoma,Kakamega and Vihiga counties. This initiative tackles missed diagnoses, inadequate management, and gaps in routine care.
PESK Training Empowers Healthcare Workers for Effective T1DM Management
Workshops, seminars, and hands-on sessions equip healthcare workers with the latest knowledge for:
Early T1DM Recognition: Prompt identification of symptoms for timely intervention.
Optimized Management Strategies: Evidence-based approaches including insulin therapy, diet, and lifestyle modifications.
Comprehensive Care Protocols: Holistic care encompassing medical treatment, psychosocial support, and patient education.
Building a Network for Improved T1DM Care Across Kenya
This program empowers healthcare workers, fosters a network of trained professionals, and advocates for better diabetes care throughout Kenya. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in supporting children and adolescents with T1DM.
I did realize how far I was in terms of diagnosis and treatment of T1DM,today’s sessions have opened up my mind to a clearer and objective management of T1DM.
A very educative session, very timely with the latest updates on Type I Diabetes, practical sessions by a multidisciplinary panel of expert facilitators. Enhanced participatory discussions and knowledge sharing to participants.
OThe day has been good . The entire topic on Type one DM was great. The. Presentation by today’s facilitators ranging from clinical presentation to the treatment , I learnt alot and for now can attend to those children well.
A very informative training.
Knowledgeable and committed facilitators who willingly shared evidence-based information on current management of acute complications of pediatric diabetes .
Looking forward to day 2 training.
There’s under diagnosis of T1DM among children and adolescents because it’s presentation mimics other conditions.
Most children are diagnosed when in DKA
When managing DKA Rehydration is first priority over insulin therapy.
Its important to observe right carbohydrate calories so that normal glycemic levels throughout the day.
Exercise are not recommended when the sugars are above 14mmols
4 types of insulin:Rapid acting, regular, intermediate and long acting.
Very important and informative training, how I wish we could have enough time to listen and grasp all these sessions. My request is supply us with the notes and relevant learning materials to continue updating ourselves.
The training is educative …I have already learnt a lot in day one…
The facilitators have enough knowledge on T1DM…Hoping for more updates as we continue for the 2 days

It is an amazing training,to start with very informative facilitators, learned never to miss any diagnosis of T1DM,never to delay in diagnosis of T1DM, management esp the transition from premix to basal bolus.
Insightful 2 days of T1DM management. Take home for the two days.
1. Insulin intensification
2. Children require insulin, nutrition and exercise for optimal growth
3. Diabetes management in toddlers and adolescent requires multi-facet approach.
4. TIDM patient require growth monitoring (this has been overlooked for a while)
5. T1DM patient we look at and think they have cushing syndrome……we need to think again…and intensify therapy and nutrition is the key.
My love for care for T1DM patient has been ignited even more.
