The Pediatric Endocrine Society of Kenya (PESK), in partnership with the Clinton Health Access Initiative and the Ministry of Health, is making significant strides in improving the lives of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) in Meru and Samburu County. This initiative addresses critical challenges such as missed diagnoses, inadequate management, and gaps in routine care.
PESK’s comprehensive training programs equip healthcare workers with the essential tools for effective T1DM management. Workshops, seminars, and hands-on sessions focus on:
Early T1DM recognition: Prompt identification of symptoms for timely intervention.
Optimized management strategies: Evidence-based approaches including insulin therapy, diet, and lifestyle modifications.
Comprehensive care protocols: Holistic care encompassing medical treatment, psychosocial support, and patient education.
By empowering healthcare workers and fostering a network of trained professionals, this program aims to enhance diabetes care throughout Kenya. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in supporting children and adolescents with T1DM and ensuring their well-being.
The training was very impactful, trainers very knowledgeable and experienced.I am now empowered to handle children with Type 1 DM, especially their psychosocial issues.
The course material was very relevant, delivered at a good pace. The sessions were interactive and clear. All in all grateful to have been part of the training.
Very interesting to learn on how to calculate the carbohydrates coverage insulin dose but I know it will be a challenge for a pastrolist child who has no program for a three meal schedule, unavailable snacks and challenges with storage of insulin due to extreme climate. The cost of insulin can also be a barrier.
The training was very intensive , especially on Type1Diabetes,am grateful to have been part of the training, the facilitators were well equipped with knowledge and skills concerning Type 1 diabetes,am grateful to have been part of the training.
I realized i have missing out on many case findings due to lack of sensitization , types of insulin and mode of action , relation between insulin , carbohydrate and exercise has been of great help to me.
It was a well equiped training with very good trainers.I have gained a lot of knowledge n for sure it will help me give the best quality of care to my pts n diagnose T1DM early.Thank you n God bless as u do good to the children
The training was very educative, it will definitely help me improve the quality of care I will give to the patients. It was a very interactive session , facilitators were clear and taught us well.
Sessions were very intense , interactive , educative and very practical in the current hospital settings .
Learning on weight of carbohydrate on every diet, insulin bolus in between meals and adolescent challenges who are living with type one diabetes..
The training is very detailed and the facilitators were well equipped. I am requesting for more Nutritionists to undergo the same training for the benefit of our children.
This training was long overdue. Most clinicians have been practicing near withcraft stuff. We need this training cascaded down to all clinicians in public, private and FBOs hospitals. We need a paradigm shift to how T1DM children are managed. My highlight for the training is carbohydrate counting, meal ratios and insulin adjustments.. We thank PESK and CHAI for organizing this training and delivering with very skilled trainers. God bless
Our facilitators and our partner you guys have really impacted us with knowledge that we are going to apply to manage our patients .We are very grateful for the training from now on we are going to give quality care to our patients because we have really learnt alot. Thanks may God bless you all.
Very educative.
Follow up of the training and more monitoring and evaluation after the trainings in later days through the MOH and hospital management’s is advised
The training is very educative and we need a strategy to trickle down the knowledge to other healthcare worker for efficient management of ourT1 DM patient.
This training has provided clarity on many aspects of clinical management of DM1. I am grateful for gaining clarity particularly on diagnostic aspect, pharmaco-therapeutic aspect, and monitoring and evaluation aspect .
The training was quite informative and impactful hence aids in improving TIDM outcomes. Improved knowledge on carbohydrate counting. Practice makes perfect.
The training was informative,my expectations were met… I feel more confident now as I go back to my subcounty now I’ll make type 1 diabetes diagnosis easily without delay and manage it and the associated complications easily. Thanks PESK and CHAI for thinking well about the children out here .Your effort will be appreciated very soon with the change that is coming as we go out there cascade the knowledge and manage these kids
The training was quite informative provided much needed information and clarity on T1DM a field that many healthworkers have minimal knowledge on ,hopefully many such trainings will go on so that a wide range/Number of healthcare providers can be at par and able to manage our children with T1DM.Thank you
As we return to Samburu, we are more equipped, more confident, and more united in our mission to improve the lives of those living with diabetes. We look forward to staying connected with you all as we continue this important work.
The training was so timely when we are experiencing high incidences of children with diabetes type 1 in the county while our health care workers and mostly Frontline clinicians lack knowledge on both diagnosis and management. Very many misdiagnosis have been reported before the correct diagnosis is made. This training comes in handy to fill this gap and I can say it’s sun rise for Meru county health care workers.
It was comprehensive, detailed and presented in a manner that learning took place.
Personally I believe that I’ve learnt a lot and shall cascade the knowledge to my colleagues who didn’t have a chance to be trained.
Special thanks to all our wonderful presenters/facilitators, Chai and Pesk for giving Meru county health care workers a chance to be trained. Blessings 🙏
