Empowering Communities: Successful Type 1 Diabetes Training in Nyeri and Nyandarua Counties

In recent developments aimed at enhancing healthcare in Nyeri and Nyandarua counties, a significant stride was made in the management of type 1 diabetes among children and adolescents. The success story unfolded through a comprehensive training program tailored to equip healthcare professionals and caregivers with essential skills and knowledge.
This training was done by Pediatric Endocrine Society Kenya ( PESK) in collaboration with Clinton Health Access Initiative ( CHAI) and Council of Governors ( CoG).
The Training Program: The training program focused on various critical aspects of type 1 diabetes management, including:
1. Diagnosis: Participants received in-depth training on early detection techniques and the importance of prompt diagnosis in mitigating complications.
2. Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) Management: Special emphasis was placed on recognizing and effectively managing DKA, a potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes.
3. Basal Bolus Regimen: Healthcare professionals were trained on the intricacies of the basal bolus insulin regimen, essential for achieving optimal blood glucose control.
4. Dietary Education: Nutritionists and caregivers received comprehensive education on carbohydrate counting tailored to the unique dietary needs of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes using basal bolus insulin regimen.
5. Diabetes Education: Participants were equipped with tools and strategies to deliver effective diabetes education to patients and their families, empowering them to support the child or adolescent living with T1DM.
Participant Appreciation Feedback from participants underscored their appreciation for the thoroughness and relevance of the training program. They highlighted the following key points:
Emphasis on Crucial Areas: Participants commended the focus on critical areas such as diagnosis, DKA management, insulin regimen, diet, and diabetes education, recognizing their significance in improving patient outcomes.
Practical Application: The practical nature of the training allowed participants to acquire hands-on skills and strategies that could be immediately implemented in clinical practice.
Community Impact: Healthcare professionals expressed optimism about the potential positive impact of the training on the communities they serve, foreseeing improved diabetes management and better quality of life for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

This was a great milestone. The enthusiasm demonstrated by both the participants and the trainers was on another level. We remain optimistic that no child will die of undiagnosed diabetes.
